Who are we?
The Whitehorse Food Bank was started in 2007 by a group of concerned citizens who saw the need to provide emergency food to the hungry while supporting the greater effort to alleviate poverty. We opened our doors in May 2009.
The Food Bank relies on hundreds of hours of volunteer energy each month. We have a committed volunteer Board of Directors and dozens of volunteers that regularly support the work of bare bones staff. We have 1 full-time staff member and 1 part-time staff member.
We are also generously supported by so many individuals, families, schools, churches, businesses and other organizations throughout the year.
Together, we all help feed hungry people in our community.
Who are we serving?
Since opening in May 2009, we have registered almost 6300 people. This represents about 24% of the population of Whitehorse. Any individual or family can receive 3 days of emergency food per month. On average, over 1300 people come to the food bank for help every single month. 1/3 of those are children and youth.
As part of a caring community, provide emergency food to the hungry while supporting the greater effort to alleviate poverty.
At the Food Bank of Whitehorse, all our decisions and relationships are guided by the following values:
